FCDO Expert Roundtable: Localisation of Aid to Myanmar

Activity: Participating in or organising an event › Workshop with external stakeholders/organisations

Description

In recent years, traditional donors have been moving towards ‘localising’ aid: empowering local responders in affected countries to deliver aid. This is part of a wider move towards ‘decolonising’ development, and often a necessary step to reach communities in conflict-affected countries like Myanmar. But how is this process going? What do local responders and communities think about UK efforts? What could be done differently?

This expert round table will focus on the case of Myanmar but have resonance for other situations and wider humanitarian practice. It will feature:

Anne-Meike Fechter, Professor of Anthropology and International Development, University of Sussex, longstanding expert on localised cross-border aid delivery and civilian protection.
Kirsten McConnachie, Professor of Socio-Legal Studies, UEA, Myanmar lead on a multinational research project exploring how protracted displacement economies operate and how they can be supported.
Shahariar Sadat, Director of BRAC University’s Centre for Peace & Justice, and part of the FCDO’s XCEPT-funded study on aid to the Rohingyas.
Gum Sha Awng, Director of the Metta Foundation, Myanmar’s leading non-governmental aid organisation.

The session will begin with presentations and then open up for discussion. Classified at OFFICIAL to enable participation by Country-Based Staff. Please forward this invitation widely – all welcom
