Introduction The Journal of Adult Protection welcomes this Special Issue on topics relating to safeguarding carers from abuse, harm and neglect. The special issue aims to bring together what is known about safeguarding carers in the UK and internationally. We currently know comparatively little about the protection of the rights, safety and well-being of unpaid family carers, including their help-seeking behaviour, how the current safeguarding process and systems work together to identify unpaid family carers’ needs and outcomes, and appropriate support both in the UK and internationally. We particularly welcome papers on unpaid family carers who are abused by the people they provide care for or carers who abuse the people they provide care for, including paid carers. We also welcome related issues on safeguarding carers from underrepresented groups. We know little about how children and family services and adult services work together to safeguard, protect and support affected grandparent kinship carers and parents from abuse, violence and harm and would welcome contributions in this area. Papers on how unpaid family carers go through safeguarding adult assessment processes would also be of interest, together with considerations of what are the most effective interventions that support them. Contributions can include empirical research on safeguarding unpaid family carers from abuse and harm or papers focusing on the practice domain, opinion papers, policy analysis or theoretically based papers on the topic relating to both the UK and international contexts. In what ways and to what extent do current safeguarding processes support unpaid family carers What are effective practice tools, assessments methods that support affected family carers? How do agencies including public bodies and authorities work together to safeguard unpaid family carers from abuse and harm and from committing harm? What theories and models of practice help us to understanding the protection of carers from abuse and neglect as well as individuals who may experience harm from their caregivers What policies and legal framework underpin current practice on safeguarding carers What are the gaps in policy, law and practice and what are the possible ways forward in safeguarding carers from abuse harm and neglect? What are the most effective interventions that supports carers from abuse, harm and neglect
