Open Research for the Humanities - A Resource Creation Programme

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventExternal CPD provision or delivery of course

Description

This training programme offers postgraduate researchers (PGRs) an introduction to the principles and practices of open research. Responding to growing expectations around transparency and accessibility in research, this initiative explores key concepts such as open access publishing, open data, open licensing, and the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reproducibility). Recognising the lack of tailored resources for humanities disciplines, this programme uses a combination of authentic case studies and gamification to foster active learning and decision-making.

Through two online sessions and an in-person workshop, participants will explore real-world scenarios and propose solutions to barriers in implementing open research. The programme runs from January to July 2026 and will involve PGRs in the co-creation of an open research training resource, designed by and for humanities scholars. Participants will be able to:

- Identify and explain the FAIR principles of open research
- Recognise relevant activities, such as open data, open methods, open licensing, open access publishing, open educational resources
- Define the eight forms of copyright and creative commons licensing and explain the implications for content reuse
- Apply findings from open research case studies to fictional research scenarios
- Propose solutions to obstacles in implementing open research
- Create extensions to the Copyright Dough game system
