Description

‘Copyright Dough’
Grant Young, Matthew Sillence, Hannah Crago (University of Essex and University of East Anglia)

This session introduces an innovative and collaborative project to develop an expansion pack for ‘Copyright Dough’, a successful game used in teaching open licensing. Copyright Dough was originally developed by Essex in 2020. Our 2026 expansion pack integrates lived experiences through its co-design with PGRs at UEA and Essex, adding elements to the original game which help in its application to arts, humanities, and social science researchers. This focus on AHSS aims to address barriers which research has shown can make understanding and applying key open research principles in these disciplines more difficult. We aimed to develop a new resource to enable more inclusive open research training. The expansion also adds to the game some of the collaborative approaches catalogued within the MORPHHS Project, along with some up-to-date scenarios, such as a researcher using an AI agent. Supported by a grant from the Chase Doctoral Training Partnership, we, as open research and doctoral training staff, collaborated with arts and humanities PGR students at Essex and UEA through playing and critiquing the game, before scoping out and co-creating the new elements contained in the expansion pack. We will discuss our approach to using collaboration and co-creation between the two universities, the open research experts, and PGRs, and will also reflect on using gamification as a useful approach to open research teaching and learning. Finally, we'll outline the original game along with its new expansion pack, to introduce OpenFest participants to this open educational resource and its potential for reuse, adaptation, and further development within open research learning.
