'Racing in the East Challenge Trophy' - Mildenhall Fen Tigers Speedway

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventFestival/Exhibition/Performance

Description

The 'Racing in the East' exhibition, curated by Dr Richard Mills, was installed for the 'Racing in the East Challenge Trophy'. This event, contested between the Mildenhall Fen Tigers and the Isle of Wight Warriors, marked the 50th anniversary of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers Speedway Club. It was also the club's return to race action - after a two-year absence - following the establishment of the Mildenhall Speedway Supporters Community Trust (a CIC). This marked a rare success story for a sport which has witnessed the closure of multiple historic venues in recent years. In addition to the installation of the touring exhibition at the stadium and sponsorship of the event, Dr Mills wrote a 2,000-word article for the souvenir programme: 'Cold War, Hot Fen! Fifty International Years of Mildenhall Speedway'. These activities, underpinned by RITE research outputs, supported the endeavour to save one of the region's famous clubs, underlined the transnational role of a local sports team to the public, and raised awareness of UEA's East Centre and the Centre of East Anglian Studies (CEAS).
