To Hell with the Media: On Robert Rauschenberg’s XXXIV Drawings for Dante’s Inferno In conjunction with the exhibition Embracing Modernism: Ten Years of Drawings Acquisitions, this series of lectures by international scholars will feature current research in the field of twentieth and twenty-first century drawings. This series is co-organized by the Morgan Drawing Institute and the Department of Education. Exploring specific drawings within the complex suite of Dante’s Inferno, this lecture asks: what vision of contemporary America do Rauschenberg’s Inferno drawings present? What is at stake in the artist’s selection of source material and his decisions regarding its placement and treatment? And how does the project relate to the conventions of drawing in mid-century in New York.
