Translating Puns

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventParticipation in workshop or seminar

Description

In this workshop literary translator Rachel Ward looked at two particular genres where we might encounter puns, with examples from Zippel, The Little Keyhole Ghost by Alex Rühle (ill. Axel Scheffler, Andersen Press, 2019) and Hotel Cartagena by Simone Buchholz (Orenda Books, 2021). We explored some of the strategies translators can use to tackle word play and keep the reader laughing in the same places as the reader of the source text.
