Description: This study pertains to the examination of the impact of corporate environmental crimes involving Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution on individuals, particularly those residing in close proximity to affected areas and individuals who have professional exposure to PFAS. The primary objective of this research endeavor is to identify and analyze critical aspects of victimology in the context of such environmental crimes.

Our research adheres rigorously to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and encompasses an analysis of 27 documents originating from the United States, Australia, Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. We meticulously extracted pertinent information in accordance with the COREQ Checklist and conducted an open coding analysis employing the Atlas.ti software.

The outcome of our analysis revealed the presence of five discernible stages within the PFAS adaptation process experienced by affected individuals and communities. These stages encompass the pre-discovery phase, during which individuals are unaware of PFAS contamination, followed by the discovery phase, characterized by the acknowledgment of contamination. Subsequently, individuals undergo lifestyle changes, experience alterations in their social networks, and sometimes engage in activism to address the adverse consequences of PFAS pollution. Within each of these five phases, unique lived experiences of victims come to the fore, encompassing physical, psychological, emotional, and socio-economic dimensions.

To enhance comprehension of the intricate dynamics and broader implications of PFAS pollution on victims, we have developed a conceptual framework incorporating these five distinct phases. This framework serves as a visual representation aiding in the understanding of the multifaceted nature of victim experiences.

This study underscores the pressing need for an expanded knowledge base concerning corporate environmental crimes, particularly as it pertains to comprehending the experiences of victims and the profound ramifications of PFAS pollution. By focusing on victimology within the context of corporate environmental offenses, this systematic review sheds light on previously obscured facets of victimization. It emphasizes the imperative of acknowledging and addressing the consequences of PFAS pollution and underscores the necessity for further research to deepen our comprehension of its implications for affected individuals and communities.

Ultimately, this research serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative to consider the experiences of those residing in proximity to corporate entities and individuals employed within industries that handle PFAS, thereby facilitating more informed and compassionate approaches to addressing corporate environmental crimes.
