The Data Science and Statistics Laboratory is developing analysis approaches that use a combination of data science and statistical techniques to exploit "big data".
Big data has profoundly changed the way that research is done in areas such as health and social policy, as data from specially-designed studies has been superseded by much larger amounts of real data from sources such as NHS, local government, businesses and social media.
We have a long-standing collaboration with Aviva (Norwich Union, as was). Aviva is a major player in the UK economy and, with its general insurance based in Norwich, the Company presents a key partner for the School. Our research is being applied to improve Aviva pricing models, its marketing and its risk assessment.
As well as working in the financial services sector, practical work has been undertaken on health related data, especially on the analysis of large databases from Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital and of the general practice data. Supporting this research, in the last five years funding has been received from EPSRC, MRC, Wellcome Trust, the National Osteoporosis Society and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries as well as numerous companies.
