East Centre: UEA Centre for the Study of East Central Europe and the Former Soviet Space

Organisation profile

East Centre is UEA's interdisciplinary centre for the study of East and Central Europe and the former Soviet space. Established at the end of 2021, the centre draws on a long and rich tradition of Slavic and East European studies at UEA. Our mission is to create a space where academics, researchers and students can come together for discussion and dialogue across the field as a whole. Our members include historians, translators, literature scholars, political scientists and others who study the region, its peoples and its languages. Research specialisms within the centre include literary translation, Soviet history, Russia-Japan cultural encounters, Balkan history, and international communism. We organise and co-sponsor talks, lectures, workshops and conferences on a wide range of themes, and work together with partners within and outside UEA to advance the study of all aspects of East and Central Europe and the former Soviet space. East Centre works to help create a stimulating environment for research, and we welcome enquiries from potential research postgraduate students.
