MEDIA (media equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility)

Organisation profile

Organisation profile

UEA's MEDIA (media equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility) Group is built around the key principles of equal and equitable media representation, media diversity and freedom, inclusive participation and practice, and media accessibility for all.  Through these aims, the group speaks to UN stainable development goals (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17) and UEA’s marshalling of them.

The cross-University research group, and its aims, bring together existing impact and research across the University, from freedom and global rights for journalists, digital accessibility and audiovisual translation, youth and digital engagement, girls’ rights and PlanUK, decolonising festivals, archival visibility of women filmmakers, gender and sexuality based online violence, feminist approaches to eating disorders and media representation, offensive humour, media disinformation, (mis)representation, and so forth.

MEDIA seeks to amplify, advocate for and align its member’s funded research projects, impact partnerships, local industry collaborations and festivals, including Norwich International Queer Film (NQIFF) and the UEA Green Film Festival. It also speaks to our leadership in enhancing diversity and social justice in journalism practice and policy, and global media monitoring (including members co-authoring the Index on International Media Freedom Support and co-leading the WACC Global Media Monitoring Project UK).

MEDIA includes colleagues from across a range of Schools and Faculties (MLC, IIH, PPA, LDC, DEV, MED, EDU) and is open to all staff and postgrduate reseachers. The principles of inclusion and equality are central to membership and participation within MEDIA.
