Academic Background

Abigail Moffett is an archaeologist specialising in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of African material culture.  Her research interests cover different aspects of the political economy of precolonial and historical communities in southern Africa, focusing on themes of power, craft, exchange, gender, labour and identity. In her recent work she has been exploring the biographical value of traded objects found in African archaeological contexts, in order to better understand the nature and impact of early global interactions and entanglements on the African continent. Dr Moffett obtained her PhD from the University of Cape Town in 2017, and is currently a  Newton International fellow at the Sainsbury Research Unit. She has taught undergraduates and postgraduate classes at the University of Cape Town, and more recently, at UEA.
