Ben Evans is a Postgraduate Researcher in the School of Law and a member of the Centre for Competition Policy. He holds an LLM in IT and IP Law (Distinction).

Ben’s doctoral research is focussed on the problem of data advantage and explores the interplay between competition law and information technology and intellectual property law. He is particularly interested in EU and UK competition law, the regulation of digital markets, data protection law, digital intellectual property law, and the development of laws relating to data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI).

Ben has presented at leading international law and economics conferences and national postgraduate research colloquiums. His co-authored research on the EU Data Act has been cited in an Autorité de la concurrence (French competition authority) 2023 market study on competition in the cloud sector. At the Centre for Competition Policy, he has experience leading a consultation response to Ofcom relating to cloud computing services and has contributed to a consultation response to the UK IPO relating to AI and intellectual property.

Ben is an active member of the Competition Law Association and the Society for Computers and Law (SCL). He is a regular contributor to Computers and Law and a member of the SCL Book Review panel.

Teaching Interests

Ben is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has experience teaching EU and UK competition law, including the economics of competition law. He has also lectured on the regulation of digital markets.
