Personal profile

Working with Thomas Greaves and Davide Rizza, my provisional thesis title is "A recognitive theory of identity and the structuring of public space". My main research interests are contemporary identity politics, discourses of the self, and the various ways in which these are impacted by our conceptions of political space. In particular, my research is examining notions of subjectivity, personhood and agency alongside the pathologies of contemporary identity politics, with an aim to address and overcome these concerns. My work attends to the negative impacts of certain practices within identity politics, with the aim to devise new forms of political practice that will empower identity politics such that it can achieve its desired ends. In order to do this, I return to Hegel's conception of recognition, aiming to rescue it from its numerous critics. As such, I am predominantly working with Hegel, Hannah Arendt and several post-structuralist thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and Giorgio Agamben. I have additional research interests in phenomenology, mysticism, and political mythology, as well as an interest in the study of modern foreign languages - particularly French and Italian.
