Academic Background

I have only recently made the jump over to Environmental Science, previously attained a Masters in Chemistry from the Univeristy of Strathclyde. It was here I encountered the topic of MPs, which combined with my interesting in the natural world eventually led me to UEA.

My PhD project is "The Effects of Microplastics on Salt Marsh Ecosystem Services" which aims to explore the relatively unknown impact of microplastics on plants and sediments. A huge part of being able to regulate plastics is knowing their distribution, and so through this project I hope to be able to show the prevelance of microplastics across salt marshes and their surrounding environments. I also hope to be able to study some of the direct plastic-plant and plastic-sediment effects, and understand how presence of microplastics in salt marshes may impact their ability to act as carbon storage reservoirs.
