Personal profile

Biography

I am a consultant upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital since 2015. I qualified from Leeds University Medical School and completed a two year doctorate in medicine (MD) before entering higher surgical training in Yorkshire and the North East of England. I was privileged to gain a vast amount of expertise in the specialist resection of oesophagogastric (OG) cancer in one of the largest OG cancer centres in Europe, the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne under the supervision of Professor SM Griffin OBE. Following completion of my surgical training, I was chosen for an overseas fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery with Prof. David Watson at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, Australia.

I currently supervise a number of junior colleagues and medical students on projects pertaining to upper gastrointestinal surgical diseases. These include an Academic Clinical Fellow, MRes and Academic Foundation programme doctors. My research interests include oesophagogastric malignancy, the microbiome within the upper gastrointestinal tract as well as benign diseases of the biliary tree. I am involved in a number of collaborative research projects with Professor Mark Pallen at the Quadram Institute as well as other groups both national and international. I am passionate about developing ‘grass roots’ level links between Norwich medical school and our surgical department to encourage our students to explore a surgical academic career.

I am actively involved in both undergraduate and post-graduate medical education. I have co-authored a leading textbook for the post-graduate FRCS examination in general surgery and have been an invited speaker on the FRCS.
