Cameron Giles is a Lecturer in Criminal Law with a broad research interest in the law surrounding issues of sexuality and sexual activity. He is also interested in legal theory, sentencing and the punishment of offenders. His research has been published in journals including the Journal of Criminal Law and Information and Communications Technology Law as well as in other academic publications. An experienced legal educator, he is the author of Tort Law and the co-author of Criminal Law textbooks (CILEX Education 2025). 

His current research explores developments in criminal justice policy across the 20th century. Cameron is currently writing a paper exploring the role of Christanity in parliamentary debate on capital punishment and is leading the organisation of a one-day conference exploring the 70th anniversary of the publication of the "Wolfenden Report", which acted as a key development in the move to decriminalise homosexuality in England and Wales. 

Cameron joined UEA in 2026 from London South Bank University, where he had been based since 2020. He sits on the Executive Committee of the Association of Law Teachers and is Social Media Editor of The Law Teacher, the Association's journal. 

20th Century Criminal Justice Policy

Cameron's current research explores the role of religious and other stakeholders in 20th century criminal justice reform, particularly the abolition of capital punishment, the decriminalisaiton of homosexuality and the campaigns to equalise the age of consent. 

Sexuality and Sexual Offending

Often employing empirical legal analysis, Cameron is also interested in the law's response to evolving sexual practices, particularly new technologies and sexuality. Cameron's PhD explored HIV disclosure on online mobile dating applications and his more recent work has considered the UK's online safety legislation as a response to image-based abuse. He is currently writing a paper exploring the human rights implications of the ongoing criminalisaiton of HIV transmission.

Legal Education and Higher Education Policy

Cameron is also an active legal educaiton researcher and has led award winning research into the law curriculum. In 2024-2025, he led a project funded by the Socio-Legal Studies Association which explored undergraduate perspectives on the law curriculum, which is currently being written up for publication.
