I am a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and Clinical Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology with a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge and 18 years’ experience of providing specialist input to adults with long term neurological conditions, including 7 as a stroke specialist.
Within my region, East Anglia, I was awarded my NHS Trust Chairman’s Outstanding Achievement Award in 2013, for my work establishing a stepped care system of psychological support for adult stroke survivors across the Cambridgeshire community. In 2014 and 2015 I was then awarded a Health Education Quality Improvement Fellowship and then an Advanced Quality Improvement Fellowship. In 2017, I returned to the University of East Anglia (UEA) where I undertook clinical training, and worked for 5 years as Academic Director of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology including a restructure of the curriculum and the introduction of online teaching to ensure continuity of training through the Covid-19 pandemic (2018-2023). Following many years as a neuro-rehabilitation professional in interdisciplinary teams, I am proud to act as the lead for Interprofessional Learning in the Dept of Clinical Psychology and Psychological Therapies at UEA. I supervise doctoral level clinical research on psychological and neuropsychological barriers to good outcomes following stroke, such as post-stroke pain, apathy, depression, suicidality and lack of access to cognitive rehabilitation and stroke psychology.
Nationally, I have contributed to national clinical guidance in stroke, playing a role first in the development of the previous National Clinical Guideline in Stroke and then as the Neuropsychology representative in the most recent update of the NICE guidance on stroke rehabilitation for adults. I contribute to the British Psychological Society Division of Neuropsychology Policy Unit, sit on the committee of the Organisation for Psychological Research in Stroke, and actively contribute to the UK and Ireland Stroke Psychology Network. I presented at the national stroke conference, the UK Stroke Forum, in 2021, on interdisciplinary formulations in neurorehabilitation as part of a session on interprofessionalism; in 2023, on the role and training of UK clinical neuropsychologists and in 2024, on the role of clinical psychology training programmes in supporting stroke services to meet the challenges of delivering neuropsychological provision.
Having valued mentoring and coaching, I welcome opportunities to mentor and coach in return. I am an EMCC-accredited senior practitioner coach.
I supervise doctoral level clinical research on psychological and neuropsychological barriers to good outcomes following stroke, such as post-stroke pain, apathy, depression, suicidality and lack of access to cognitive rehabilitation and stroke psychology.
I am a HCPC-registered Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist listed on the Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists, working in the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychological Therapies in the Norwich Medical School at UEA.
I co-lead the ClinPsyD module on Neuropsychology with Dr Fergus Gracey.
I teach Stroke Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, and Leading Quality Improvement in Healthcare.
