Academic Background
Biography
Dr. Dan Smith joined the School of Computing Sciences in 1990 as a postdoctoral researcher working on parallel database systems. In the following year he was appointed as a Lecturer. He spent a year visiting INRIA, where he worked on the precursor project to Kelkoo, one of the first price comparison websites. Following this his research interests focused on information retrieval. He also worked on the use of environmental noise as an indicator of context. More recently he's worked on e-government usability, and accessibility for older people.
His teaching includes Internet Technologies, Information Retrieval, Human Computer Interaction and Information Visualisation.
He is currently Director of Learning and Teaching in the School of Computing Sciences, Chair of the School's Ethics Committee, and Chair of the Faculty Appeals and Complaints Panel. He is a member of the BCS, ACM and IEEE Computer Society, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Career
Dan worked as an archaeologist and conservation projects manager, he also worked as a freelance programmer and consultant before joining UEA.
