Personal profile

Teaching Interests

Module Leader for Term A, Year 1, Term B, Year 2 and Term C, Year 2 for the Dip. HE  (Operating Department Practice) (2006 curriculum).

Module leader for mentor preparation programme (post-registration)

Since commencing at NSC in July 2003 I have held a pivotal role in developing the ODP programme within NSC and representing the profession at various committee levels.

As Course Director I am responsible for adminstering ODP training and also lead the ODP course committee and Lead Placement Mentor group that involves key clinical staff who administer the practice placements of students with UEA ODP staff. External colleagues based in clinical areas have feedback positive comment on my collaborative approach to managing students in practice.

I am a module leader for mentor preparation and am passionate about this subject and how it influences student development. I have recently been part of the team that underwent successful NMC validation for the new version of the mentorship programme.

The ODP programme continues to develop and I am striving and working with the school, clinical colleagues and commissioners to move the programme to graduate level.

Key Research Interests

I am actively involved with promoting the ODP role and influencing practice, recently joining the editorial board of a new professional journal.  I have almost 30 years experience of working in a variety of operating theatre settings locally, nationally and internationally and have a keen interest in all educational matters, especially the vital role that mentors play in supporting and developing learners.  My MA in Higher Education Practice covered a wide range of educational topics and the dissertation looked at the experiences of students qualifying following an academic programme with particular focus on their preparedness for practice.

I am passionate about the learner's experience and how mentors can influence this by developing an affective relationship with their mentee to develop new skills, meet organisational objectives and help staff develop.
