Biography
I obtained my first degree in Philosophy Università Statale di Milano, Italy, defending in the final viva voce exam a thesis on the history of the vector calculus, focussing on the work of Hermann Grassmann and Giuseppe Peano. I then moved to the UK, where I obtained a PhD from the University of Sheffield: my thesis makes use of neglected but important results in the foundations of measurement to develop a novel account of the applicability of mathematics. I became a fixed-term Associate Tutor at UEA in September 2009. From September 2010 I was a permanent member of staff in the School of Philosophy. Since 2015 I am a permanent member of the School of PPL (Politics, Philosophy, Languages and Communication Studies). I am currently an Assistant Professor at UEA and the Head of Philosophy.
Key Research Interests
Philosophy of mathematical practice. My research examines the construction of mathematical treatments for practical problems as typically arise in field like e.g. voting theory or operations research. My goal is to identify, articulate and apply useful conceptual categories to understand central aspects of scientific problem-solving that elude the traditional philosophical focus on representation, unification and explanation.
