Personal profile

Biography

I completed a Bachelor of Science at the University College of Maastricht and a MSc degree at Wageningen University in Soil Geography and Earth Surface Dynamics. As part of my MSc thesis project, I came to UEA to analyse the iodine speciation in marine aerosol samples.

I then went on to do an internship within an EU-funded project at UEA, called EXC3ITE (EXploring stratospheric Composition, Chemistry, and Circulation using Innovative TEchniques). It involved launching and retrieving balloon-borne sondes, sensors, and AirCores, from which samples were collected and analysed back in the lab for a range of trace gases, including Ozone Depleting Substances. I continued this work as a research associate, expanding it to work on trends and emissions of perfluocarbons in the troposphere, before starting my PhD at UEA.

My PhD research was on the carbon uptake by sea ice-covered regions in the Arctic and Southern Oceans. The focus is on the mediating impact of sea ice on biogeochemical processes that drive the exchange of carbon dioxide between the surface water and the atmosphere, and the carbon sequestration in the deep ocean. I base my work on observational data collected during marine expeditions to polar regions.

One of the expeditions I participated on was MOSAiC: Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate. You can read about this experience and our work here

I continue working on the role of sea ice in carbon cycling in polar oceans. My recent work contributes to the projects SO-CHIC (EU Horizon 2020) and PICCOLO (NERC).
