Key Research Interests and Expertise

The speed at which new technologies, ideas and instruments are being developed and implemented in societies all over the world is extremely high in the 21st century. Rapid globalisation, moreover, has eased and increased the movement of such innovations between different places. Social circumstancers are therefore changing faster than they ever have. As an anthropologist I am interested in the social and cultural continuities and changes that such changing circumstances produce and how these affect the lives of different people.

Do inventions like schooling and the internet cause social 'change' in the sense of a discontinuity from the past? Are old principles replaced by new ones? Or do we see cultural continuities of different kinds as people seek ways of dealing with new circumstances? These are question I am interested in. My geographical focus is East Africa.

My doctoral research focusses on the way in which social relationships have changed as a consequence of schooling in a village in Eastern Uganda. In Uganda, Universal primary education was introduced in 1997. This allowed the large majority of current youth to grow up with schooling. I explore to what extent this has led to new intergenerational relationships, marriage patterns, gender cosmologies, spousal relationships and class structures among the Bagisu, the main ethnic group in my research area.

External Activities

In addition to conducting my doctoral research I have recently launched a personal website: www.burgersblogs.com. I use this website  for posting anthropological blogs in which I reflect on societal problems and questions. The blogs and the website are in Dutch.
