Accepting PhD Students
Dr Graham Manville has been an academic for more than 20 years. He is a Visiting Academic at Norwich Business School, UEA and a full-time Associate Professor at Zayed University, United Arab Emirates. He was formerly an Associate Professor in Business and Management (2013-2020), Director of Employability (2015-2020), Director of Enterprise (2016-2020) and formerly the Associate Director for Learning and Teaching Quality (2014-2016) within NBS. Prior to joining UEA Graham was Assistant Dean and a Senior Fellow at the University of Southampton (2007-2013) and before that a Senior Lecturer at Bournemouth University (2000-2007).
He is a Senior Fellow of the HEA, a Certified Management Consultant, a Member of the Chartered Management Institute and an Incorporated Engineer since 1993. His PhD is in strategic performance management within hybrid organisations and joined UEA in 2013.
His past industry and management consulting experience coupled with a 20+ year academic career enables him to deliver teaching in Entrepreneurship, Management Consulting and Strategy that leads to excellent graduate outcomes for his students. He has also published collaboratively with several of his students at UG, MSc and MBA levels in peer reviewed international journals and conferences.
Graham is passionate about work integrated learning and all of his modules have work integrated authentic assessment whilst maintaining strong academic rigour. Graham’s subject matter expertise is focused on entrepreneurship and strategy across a variety of sectors to improve business performance. He also has a track record of publishing with business leaders in North America and across the United Kingdom.
During the course of his career, Graham has established and maintains a considerable international teaching and research network of collaborative academics in leading universities in the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the Middle East which has delivered high quality practice informed scholarship outputs in the high ranking CABS, ABDC, Scopus and Scimago journals.
His research and practice informed scholarship has won awards in several of the leading business conferences and research bodies including: The British Academy of Management (BAM) in 2015 & 2023, The European Academy of Management (EURAM) in 2017, Emerald Literati outstanding paper award in 2008 , Innovate UK Best Knowledge Transfer Partnership award in 2008, A Centre for Management Consulting Excellence (CMCE) Management Consulting (Finalist) in 2020 & 2021 & an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Early Career Researcher (finalist) in 2009.
He established and grew two International Academic and Student Exchange Programmes including a five year work integrated learning student exchange with Deakin University, Australia (2017-2022) and an Erasmus Exchange with Bulgaria's No.1 University, Sofia University (2013- Present).
His pedagogy and practice informed scholarship has won awards in several of the leading business conferences and research bodies including: BAM, EURAM, Emerald Literati, Innovate UK KTP, CMCE Management Consulting (Finalist) & ESRC Early Career Researcher (finalist).
As Director of Employability he led, developed and executed a strategy that mobilised the staff and student body to achieve transformative change to make Norwich Business School among the top 20 business schools in the UK for graduate outcomes.
As Director of Innovation he has led on developing an annual portfolio of business breakfast and evening receptions that showcase subject matter expertise within Norwich Business School.
Graham has successfully examined 2 PhD candidates and 2 DBA candidates and is open to invitations to exam further PhD and DBA candidates.
During his academic career he has secured £300K of research, teaching and enterprise income.

My research is cross-disciplinary and centres around organisational performance management and is multi faceted.
Industry 4.0 and Organisational Effectiveness within SMEs: 2020 onwards
I am working on a number of projects in the high performance precision engineering sector in disruptor companies as well as transitioning conventional companies into this new sphere.
Career and Creative Self-Efficacy: 2019 to date
In my role as Director of Employability for Norwich Business School, I have developed and implemented a strategy to improve employability prospects of our students. It includes several themes including embedding employability within the curriculum and promoting and developing self-efficacy within our students and alumni. This has opened up a rich vein of research with performance improvement implications and development of pedagogy. I am currently working on two projects in this area.
Social Housing Bond Funding: 2014 to date
Since the GFC, housing associations have faced a rapidly changing environment. This project examines the increased use of capital markets to fund social housing provision and maintenance in the UK. The study seeks to investigate contemporary issues and challenges in this market as it evolves and adapts following the GFC, in addition to changes in welfare budgets and regulation. This research is being undertaken in collaboration with colleagues at Royal Hollloway, University of London, UK.
Supply Chain Performance: 2011 - 2019
Completed a project on lean supply chain performance within SMEs and Aerospace Prime Contractors. This project specifically looks at a multiple case study investigation within the defence aviation industry. The research was undertaken in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Kent, UK and the University of Padua, Italy.
Leadership in Social Enterprises 2013 - 2017
Completed a project on follower and leader behaviour in a dyadic study involving case studies in Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada. The project was completed in 2017 with colleagues from Monash University, Deakin University and Swinburne University, Australia.
Award Winning Management Consulting Book Published in 2017 (Routledge)
Lead editor of edited book with colleagues from UEA, UK and Bradford University, UK. Included contributions from academics and international consultancy practices from around the world. Co-author of three chapters.
