Personal profile

Biography

I am an Associate Professor in Commercial Law and a qualified solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. After obtaining my PhD in international commercial arbitration, I moved into private practice, working with two prominent international commercial law firms in the City of London. I have acted on numerous commercial disputes (mostly with an international dimension) arising predominantly from the oil and gas, energy and telecoms sectors.

I have acted in a number of reported high profile cases and published widely in leading commercial and international arbitration journals. I am currently the Arbitration Editor for the Journal of Business Law and the Deputy Editor of the LCA Journal of Arbitration and Dispute Settlement.

My research focuses on international dispute resolution with particular emphasis on international arbitration, investment treaty arbitration and international commercial litigation. I have particular research interest in Sub-Sharan Africa and the Middle East and I have supervised a number of PhD students to completion. I also have research interest in business human rights, in particular the intersection between the impact of commercial activities of foreign investors on indigenous communities arising from foreign investments in the extractive industry. I am currently supervising 4 PhD students on various topics relating to international arbitration and/or dispute resolution.

In 2015, I published my book “Injunctive Relief and International Arbitration which has been described by a leading English commercial Court judge as “an important addition to the existing literature and will equally be welcomed by academics and practitioners in the arbitration community”.  In 2018, I was accredited by the Dubai Legal Affairs Department to deliver CLPD training courses in international arbitration.

I am on the arbitration panel of various arbitral institutions, including ICC Paris, ICC Nigeria, Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA),  Mauritius Arbitration and Mediation Centre (MARC), Delos Dispute Resolution (Delos) and Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC).  I have experience of sitting as an arbitrator and I have been appointed by ICC in Paris.

I currently serve as the Director of Admissions, Recruitment and Marketing for Postgraduate Courses (PGT) and also sit on the International Executive Committee for the Faculty of Social Sciences.
