Career

Helen Gourlay is a Development Lead for Teach First in the East of England, where she supports trainee teachers and early career teachers. Before working in initial teacher education, Helen was a successful and innovative science teacher. She taught science across the secondary age range for 17 years in comprehensive schools in London and Hertfordshire. This experience included working as a Team Leader for Science in two schools. Prior to working for Teach First, Helen was a lecturer in science education at King’s College London, the University of East Anglia, and Brunel University, where her responsibilities included leading a secondary ITE programme, leading on science teacher education (with a specialism in physics), School Direct, and Teach First. Her research interests include science teacher development and children and young people’s learning in science. She is currently an external examiner for another science PGCE programme in England.
