Personal profile

I am currently a Lecturer in Communication Studies. In 2022, I completed my PhD in Linguistics at the University of Kent. My research falls within the field of (interpersonal) pragmatics and generally focuses on how pragmatic meaning – e.g. verbal actions, interpersonal evaluations, and interpersonal relations – is achieved in social interactions. My doctoral project examined how participants in informal conversations simultaneously negotiate futures action, on the one hand, and interpersonal rights and obligations, on the other. In 2023, I worked as a post-doctoral Research Assistant on the BA/Leverhulme-funded research project “When the joke misfires”. My previous teaching experience includes a range of areas and topics in Linguistics and Communication, such as introductory pragmatics, semantics and syntax, ELF, the history of English, language and gender, and language in the media. In addition to my PhD, I hold an MA in English Language and Linguistics, a BA in English and American Studies, and a BA in Theatre, Film, and Media Studies from the University of Vienna (Austria).
