Key Research Interests
As a performance studies scholar and ethnographer, Ioana works at the intersection of anthropology and theatre studies, and her areas of expertise include: performance theory; ethnographic methods; the study of minority cultures and nationalisms; feminist and critical race theory; performance historiography. Ioana's research interests include activist and community performance, performance in the everyday, cultural identities and performance.
Ioana's first monograph Staging Citizenship: Roma, Performance and Belonging in EU Romania (Berghahn Books, hardback 2018; paperback 2020) is based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork with urban Roma.

Her current book project focuses on the representation of Roma in nineteenth-century theatre and performance and the forgetting of Roma enslavement. Her articles have appeared in books and journals, including Theatre Research International, New Theatre Quarterly, TDR, Performance Research and Feminist Review.
