Key Research Interests and Expertise

My research experience from UEA includes:

  • PhD linguistics/health sciences - A linguistic analysis of the relationship between empathy and empowerment in the context of person-centred therapy.  This project involved creating a hybrid qualitative linguistic framework to answer how empathy and empowerment are communicated in humanistic therapy, including how use of their linguistic expression by therapist-client dyads interrelates and fluctuates throughout the course of completed psychotherapy sessions
  • Senior research associate for workforce sustainability group in UEA health and social care partners in the faculty of medicine and health sciences - I worked on a project to map the uptake of mindfulness training by health and social care organisations
  • Co-editor of Papers in Language and Communication Studies journal.


I have worked in industry since 2003.  Duties I have undertaken include:

  • Writing and editing articles about health and wellbeing for print and online sources, including UK and international companies with reader reach extending beyond hundreds of thousands
  • Writing marketing materials for large national organisations and PR agencies
  • Data analysis for strategic and business purposes, including contributing analyses to national UK newspapers
  • Senior administrative roles for local third sector organisations with partnerships, including bidding for project funding, running projects, and project reporting for funding bodies.  Projects managed have included digital inclusivity training for young, and elderly, people
  • Creating organisational training materials, for example for police and related agencies, and for web-based and social media companies.
