Biography
Joe qualified as Children’s Nurse in 2008 and began working in the Accident and Emergency Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Here Joe cared for both adults and children working across all areas but with a particular interest in resus. Joe also trained and worked as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Following this Joe became a Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation working across the Eastern region coordinating organ donations whilst caring for end of life patients and their families. In 2019 Joe returned to emergency nursing managing the Children’s Emergency Department and again working as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Throughout the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic Joe also managed the Children’s Assessment Unit and Children’s COVID in-patient department.
Joe has also worked as a research nurse involved in paediatric clinical trials across a variety of specialisms and for a year specifically working on Cystic Fibrosis studies. As part of an NHS England pilot Joe worked in a community safeguarding children post as a nurse examiner.
In 2025 Joe began a secondment working as a Child Death Review Nurse alongside his role at UEA.
Academic Background
Joe joined HSC in 2021 as part of the Children’s Nursing lecturing team and has spent some time working as the Course Director for part of that time. Joe is involved in teaching across various programmes and is particularly involved in simulation and skills teaching. Joe is the module organsier for the Urgent and Emergency Care module.
In 2025 Joe won Educator of the Year at the national Student Nursing Times Awards.
