Academic Background
Katie Beck is a Lecturer in Nursing Science and Interim Course Director for the MSc Advanced Professional Practice. She is also module lead for the Advanced Clinical Assessment Module, Acute Clinical Deterioration in Adults module, co-module lead for the Minor Injuries Module and member of Service Improvement Project module team. Katie teaches across a range of pre- and post-registration programmes within the School with a focus on academic skills, acute and urgent care, and global health. Katie qualified as a registered adult nurse in 2011 and worked in Accident and Emergency, Acute Medicine, and Intensive Care before perusing a career in global and expedition nursing. Katie was International Medical Lead at Raleigh International for a number of years and continues to provide health, wellbeing and safeguarding advice to a number of other international non-governmental organisations. She is an Honorary Clinical Lecture in Extreme Medicine at Exeter University, Assistant Director of The Diploma of Tropical Nursing at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and member of the Fellowship of Extreme and Wilderness Medicine. She is currently studying for an MA in Higher Education Practice, and has particualr research interests in the value and ethics of pre-registration and early career international healthcare work expereinces.
