In 1995 Ken Farquhar set up the Inspirational Science Theatre Company with the ambition to inspire audiences to think more passionately about science. He has built a reputation as an original, engaging, and entertaining science presenter and trainer. This has taken him to over 20 countries performing at schools, festivals and collaborating with other science communication experts.
He draws upon a range of skills developed from on-the-job experiences in television, teaching, performing and as a small business owner. He works with children of all ages, abilities and hard to reach family audiences. His CPD Teacher sessions and adult training workshops are practical sessions designed to equip participants with tools that actively encourage pupils and members of the public to engage with science.
His work is wide ranging often collaborating with individuals, companies, and institutions. This includes different street STEM engagement projects. From partnerships with Maths Busking where early career engineers were trained to engage with crowds at the Glastonbury Festival to stakeholder activities with organisations like the Crick Institute where scientists and local residents were trained to present sport inspired street biology busking during the Olympics. He devised & collaborated with science communicators developing training courses and delivering keynote conference lectures in the UK and Middle East.
He has had a long association with several science organisations in Norwich. He worked in partnership with the Institute of Food Research presenting cookery shows demonstrating links between their research and the food in our diet. He was commissioned by the John Innes to write genetics show for their centenary anniversary and is a regular presenter at the Norwich Science festival.
In 2020 he adapted his worked to present science shows and workshops online from his kitchen. You can explore examples of his work at https://dodifferent.co.uk/
He really enjoys working with the science communicators of the future in his role as honorary lecturer at UEA.
