Biography

Ken joined the UEA in October, 2017 after eight years as the director of the Centre for Applied English Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He is a well-known researcher in the field of academic discourse, writing and language education, and has published over 29 books and 280 papers with 76,000 citations on Google Scholar. According to the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% of World Scientists analysis of the Scopus database, Ken is the world's leading scholar in language and linguistics. Ken has taught English and applied linguistics in the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Hong Kong, and been a professor at the University of Hong Kong and UCL Institute of Education in London. His most recent books include the 4th edition of Teaching and Researching Writing (Routledge, 2022), second editions of Second Language Writing (CUP, 2019) and Feedback on Second Language Writing (edited with F. Hyland, CUP, 2019), Academic Discourse and global publishing (with K Jiang, Routledge, 2019), Specialized English (edited with L. Wong, Routledge, 2019) and Novice writers writing for publication (edited with P. Habibe, Palgrave, 2019). A collection of his work was published in 2018 as 'The Essential Hyland' (Bloomsbury). He is founding co-editor of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes and was co-editor of Applied Linguistics. Ken is an Honorary professor at Jilin University in China and a Foundation Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities.
