Biography

After 16 years at UEA I have moved to the University of Exeter in 2024 as Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Business Engagement and Innovation.

At UEA I have been Academic Director of ClimateUEA at the Vice Chancellor's Office, Associate Dean for Innovation at the Social Sciences Faculty and Professor of Sustainable Energy Business at Norwich Business School.

Through my academic leadership roles I strive to make our research more impactful to external partners and to foster links with funders, industry, policy makers and civil society. I aspire to create a virtuous circle where in-depth relationships with high profile stakeholders help us improve our research outputs, impact and overall research and innovation environment.

My personal research focuses on energy sector innovation (Net Zero and rapid decarbonisation pathways) and Corporate Sustainability. My research has been generously funded by the EU, UK Government, industry and corporate investors with approximately 27m euros.

I have held or still hold visiting appointments with the ESCP (FR), the School of Economics, Management and Statistics at the University of Bologna (IT) and the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park (US).

Key Research Interests

I am an interdisciplinary researcher, looking into issues of corporate sustainability, energy and climate policy and energy sector innovation. I also have a strong emerging interest in EDI issues in the Energy Sector. If you are thinking of studying for a PhD in these areas and you would like to discuss your research ideas please email me.

I have so far supervised 11 students to a timely completion and they have all moved on to the next steps of their academic careers.

I have provided policy reviews for the Working Group III of IPCC and EU DG Clima. I have also been contracted to review for numerous research funders including within the EU Commission, the Irish Research Council and UKRI. I also provide occassional reviews for over 50 academic journals.

As Principal Investigator I have been fortunate enough to have my research projects funded with 27m euros so far. Some of the highlights  can seen below:

CIRCLE project (€5.5m; 2020-2023; EU INTERREG FCE) is applying circular economic models for the development of sustainable concrete and cement; arguably one of the most difficult to decarbonise industrial sectors. Our research contributes to advanced business models and in-depth understanding of financing of sustainability innovations.

Intelligent Community Energy (ICE) project (€8m; 2016-2023; EU INTERREG FCE) explores the role of energy communities in promoting energy innovation and economic development for remote and isolated regions. Our research has advanced state-of-the-art methods for user engagement with technology and analytical tools for low carbon energy policy evaluation.

TILOS project (€15m; 2014-2019; EU DG Energy) led to the first renewable energy island in the Mediterranean Sea and included the integration of a number of advanced technologies such as batteries and demand side management tools. Our research tested new methods for population engagement with energy infrastructure design and implementation, put forward industry-leading, profitable business models for complex energy technologies and changed to regulatory framework for energy in Greece.

I also contribute as Co-I to the Aurora Alliance (an EU Funded partnership of European Universities aiming to jointly advance their curriculums sustainability training, societal impact and community engagement). I am also Co-I with the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholars programme on the Critical Decade for Climate Change.

I have also led numerous smaller grants funded by UKRI, The British Council and industry sources. This period I am researching with colleagues angles of EDI in the Energy Sector with joint industry and UEA funding.

Teaching Interests

I have organised and taughts modules on various aspects of corporate sustainability and energy policy for UG, PG and executive education programmes.  and the MBA module Sustainable Management

I have also contributed to modules in International Business, Information Systems for Management and Innovation Management with the standard Business School curriculum.
