Biography

I am a Lecturer in Environmental Assessment and Management in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, where I am also Course Director for the MSc Environmental Assessment and Management. I mainly teach on the postgraduate modules Theory of Environmental Assessment and Environmental Assessment Effectiveness, for which I am also the module organiser, and contribute to undergraduate modules such as Earth’s Critical Zone.

Prior to joining the University of East Anglia, I was a Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University, where I also served as Programme Leader for the MSc Environmental Management programme.

My academic background is in hydrogeology, environmental science, and environmental engineering. Throughout my career, I have worked in a range of roles across the environmental sector, consultancy, research, and academia, mainly in Southeastern Europe, Ireland, and the UK.

In the environmental sector and consultancy, I have worked on a wide range of projects, including Environmental Impact Assessments, Hydrogeological Impact Assessments, Quantitative Controlled Waters Risk Assessments, and Waste Management Plans. My experience also includes projects related to sustainability, nature-based solutions, contaminated land assessments and remediation, groundwater source protection studies, and landfill construction quality assurance.

My research brings together hydrogeology, contaminant fate and transport (and transformations, where applicable), environmental microbiology, environmental public health, biogeochemistry, analytical chemistry, and environmental/numerical modelling. Much of my work focuses on challenges in rural and coastal environments. This includes protecting the quality of surface water and groundwater resources, research on wastewater and sanitation and the use of nature-based solutions, protecting public health and understanding waterborne disease transmission, especially the impacts of climate change on pathogen mobilisation, survival, replication and virulence, as well as improving remediation techniques and strategies for groundwater and contaminated sites. My work further extends to the protection of sensitive environments and habitats, especially alkaline fens and other wetlands. I am also interested in how new and emerging technologies can be used to improve environmental monitoring and the assessment of environmental impacts. Alongside these areas, I am involved in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, such as socio-hydrogeology, and collaborate with colleagues across a range of disciplines. For example, I was co-Principal Investigator on the Social Science in Water Efficiency Engagement (SWEE) project, funded by the UK Water Efficiency Collaborative Fund Board.

I am an Editor for Water and Environment Journal (CIWEM/Wiley), and an Associate Editor for Hydrogeology Journal (IAH/Springer).
