Biography
Even though my Master's degree was in mathematics, I had long been interested in Japanese (and other East Asian) arts and cultures, though I had no opportunities for formal study. This interest motivated my decision to experience living and working in Japan through the JET programme in 2000. Shortly after moving to Japan, I began practicing calligraphy, and I have continued to do so ever since. I have won prizes at national exhibitions, and my work has been displayed in prestigious museums in Japan. I have always wanted to share the incredible things that I have learned about calligraphy with people in the English-speaking world, and I believe that researching the subject as an academic and publishing the results of my research will enable me to achieve this goal.
