Matthew Aldrich

Matthew is an applied labour economist.. He has a keen interest in graduate outcomes and career development and has held various employability roles in the university - currently as Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Student Experience and Outcomes - and incorporates professional skills and attribute development into his teaching and assessment design. Matthew's current research investigates labour market activity of parents, such as: the changing nature of the labour market, participation and family working arrangements; care leave policies in the UK and EU; intersectional inequalities and the gender pay gap.

Matthew's current research investigates the impact of wellbeing interventions on student outcomes, and labour market activity of parents, such as: the changing nature of the labour market, participation and family working arrangements; care leave policies in the UK and EU; intersectional inequalities and the gender pay gap.

Recent projects include Improving student wellbeing using analytics with TASO, an assessment of inequalities in access to maternity/paternity leave and parental leave design, the methodology for which has been incorporated into the European Institute for Gender Equality's Gender Equality Index. An earlier project 'Modern Fatherhood: Fathers in 21st Century Britiain'  investigated the changing role of fathers within the family and in the labour market, and considers how institutional factors affect this relationship. It also investigated the changing working arrangements of households across Europe, and how families fared through the 2008 recession when faced with changing labour market conditions.

Matthew is currently the Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Student Experience and Outcomes at UEA, responsible for the strategic leadership for student experience, employability and graduate outcomes, continuation and placements

Matthew's teaching interests are in labour economics, welfare and policy, and currently teaches the undergraduate dissertation, offering students opportunities for employer-led live consultancy projects alongside more traditional academic research dissertations. He is a strong advocate for work-based and work-related learning opportunities.
