Personal profile

Academic Background

Dr Mohamad El Daouk (FHEA, PhD(Cantab), MSc, LLM, LLB) is a Lecturer in Construction Law at University College London (UCL) within The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, and a scholar whose work bridges law, construction, and sustainable governance. He previously pursued a PhD in Land Economy (Property Law) at the University of Cambridge, where his research explored intersections between property law, Islamic finance, and contractual frameworks in the built environment. He also holds an LLM in Construction Law from the University of Strathclyde and an MSc in Project and Enterprise Management from UCL.

As an academic, Dr El Daouk focuses on construction law, contract administration, supply chain governance, and sustainability (ESG) in construction. He teaches and leads postgraduate and undergraduate modules on construction law, procurement, and the legal regulation of construction and engineering projects, often emphasising practical applications of legal principles in real-world project management and dispute resolution. His research extends to Islamic finance and English property law, focusing on how Shariah-compliant structures operate within English common law, contributing to a nuanced understanding of Islamic finance in the context of English property and construction law.

Administrative Posts

Dr El Daouk contributes to programme leadership and curriculum development at UEA and UCL’s postgraduate programmes. At UEA, he played a key role in designing and introducing International Construction Law and Dispute Resolution, having taught and undertaken an administrative role of the module since its inception in 2021-2022. At UCL, Dr El Daouk is serving as Deputy Programme Leader of the Construction Economics and Management MSc.

Biography

Dr Mohamad El Daouk is an academic specialising in construction law, with research centred on construction contracts, risk allocation, and dispute resolution in complex construction projects. His work examines the legal regulation of project delivery, contractual liability, and governance frameworks within the construction industry, with a particular emphasis on how legal mechanisms shape industry practice and project outcomes.

Key Research Interests

Dr El Daouk’s work covers construction law, property/land economy, Islamic finance, and sustainable governance in the built environment. He investigates how legal frameworks shape and are shaped by construction contracts (particularly building and engineering contracts), how ethical and faith-based approaches (for example within supply chains) can be implemented in construction project management, and how conventional common-law regimes interact with Islamic-finance structures (for example Islamic mortgages under English and Welsh law).  More recently his research has extended into Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues in the construction sector, looking at how supply-chains, procurement and contractual practices can support sustainable outcomes and respond to regulatory, policy and market pressures. In summary, his agenda is multidisciplinary, drawing together contract law, property law, construction management, finance, and sustainability, in order to explore how legal and regulatory frameworks can promote better governance and performance in the built environment.

Teaching Interests

Dr Mohamad El Daouk has an extensive teaching portfolio in construction law, spanning postgraduate legal education at the University of East Anglia and external teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at University College London. His teaching focuses on construction contracts, procurement, claims, and dispute resolution, with a strong emphasis on aligning legal theory with construction industry practice.
