Biography

Nigel Norris is Professor of Education. He was appointed to the Centre for Applied Research in Education in 1979, first as a Senior Research Associate and in 1982 as a Lecturer specialising in educational evaluation. Since then he has been involved in a wide variety of evaluation and research studies including evaluations of curriculum development and information technology in education; police training in the UK and Australia; nurse education; GP training and professional and vocational training policies; curriculum reform in Spain; the reform of the comprehensive school curriculum in Finland; school breakfast clubs in England and the setting up of children's trusts. Working closely with colleagues in the School of Pharmacy and the Norwich Medical School, he is part of a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) funded research programme into medicines management in care homes and the role of pharmacists as independent prescribers. His current research interests include the development of educational evaluation and the history of educational research. He has been Dean and more recently Head of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning(1998 – 2001 & 2007 – 2010), he was a Pro-Vice-Chancellor from 1998 – 2004, and again in 2012 – 13 and in 2014 he was acting Head of the Norwich Medical School. He is the Executive Editor of the Cambridge Journal of Education and on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Education Policy.

Key Research Interests

Current research interests include: (i) the development of educational research and evaluation since 1945; (ii) the disciplinary, institutional, social and political context of educational research; (iii) the curriculum reform movement.

Teaching Interests

Professor Norris' teaching duties have included the range of research methodology and theory courses within the Centre for Applied Research in Education. He has taught on the full and part time MA, Ed.D and PhD programmes. His undergraduate teaching has focused on the social construction of childhood.
