Personal profile

Academic Background

I am an obstetrician-scientist, currently Pro-Vice Chancellor, Medicine and Health Sciences at UEA, having previously been PVC, Life Sciences, and Dean of Medicine at the University of Leicester. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, have published 450 peer-reviewed research articles (H-index » 98), been awarded >£50M for my own research portfolio (institutional applications >£100M), and supervised over 40 PhD/MD theses. I was principal author of the position paper ‘Health of Women and Children’, considered at the 2010 G8 Leaders’ Summit.

I trained in Nottingham, Cambridge and Pittsburgh before taking Chairs of Obstetrics in Nottingham and Manchester. I then led research institutes/medical faculties overseas, before returning to the UK. Much of my work has an international perspective, consequent on these substantive posts in North America, Asia and Australasia.

A clear strategic vision has been crucial to each of my leadership roles, and each has incorporated significant staff numbers and financial management (up to £250M pa).
