Academic Background
Sam has conducted long-term fieldwork in the Kandhamal Hills of Odisha, India. This research formed the basis of his PhD, from the Department of Anthropology, London School of Economics, which examined the intercommunal politics of agroecological and socioreligious change in a contested landscape. His work engages questions of autonomy, mutuality, sovereignty, ritual, value, and the creation of ethnographic theory.
Sam's wider interests include the deep history of human musicality, the political economies of smuggling, and stem cells.
