Biography

Dr Sheheryar Banuri is an internationally recognized behavioral economist, an author, and a scholar-practitioner. He is currently a By-Fellow, Dean of College, and Tutor at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge, and an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of East Anglia.  He is a pioneer in the field of behavioral development economics, specializing in motivation, governance, and discrimination, and an expert on incentive design.

His (current) research agenda focuses on three main areas: (i) public service motivation and effort, (ii) bias measurement and impact of de-biasing techniques with elite samples, and (iii) gender-based discrimination.

He has nearly two decades of research experience and has provided policy guidance to government agencies.  He routinely consults for multilateral organizations, providing policy advice and intellectual support.  His work has been published in leading academic journals in Economics, Computer Science, Medicine, and Psychology, and he is a co-author of the World Bank’s influential World Development Report 2015: Mind, Society, and Behavior.  He is also the author of two popular books on decision-making: Good Decisions for Strange Situations and The Decisive Mind (shortlisted for the Best Behavioural Science book award by the Global Association of Applied Behavioural Scientists).

His research is based on decision-making using a combination of lab and field experiments across the world.  His expertise has enabled him to uncover valuable insights on human behavior and share them through various channels, including publications in leading academic journals, policy briefs for governments, and books on behavioral science topics.
