Key Responsibilities

I am responsible for the strategic direction of Cefas science and am accountable for the quality of evidence and advice to customers.   I also have the role of Head of Science Profession, ensuring effective career progression for Cefas scientists.

I collaborate with Defra and other national Institutes to build Cefas’ science reputation and provide partnership solutions to science challenges. 

Through the Cefas Management Board I contribute to strategic planning and leadership, and determine Science Strategy and delivery of Ministerial Science Indicators. 

I lead science innovation through a self-investment science programme to invest in Cefas R&D.

As a senior environmental advisor, I provide high level policy advice and support to UK government and in Europe, and am an active advisor in the European Commission and ICES. 

Biography

I am an environmental scientist with over twenty-five years research experience with Cefas and have published over 70 papers in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.  I have managed and contributed to commercial and government research contracts, and delivered high quality science using multidisciplinary teams across the organisation. 

I have experience in providing evidence to support UK government policy, including the development of Marine objectives and indicators, the ecosystem approach, and implementation of the Marine Act and Marine Policy Statement.   

This experience is supported by an international reputation through involvement in marine ecosystem assessment and management issues across Europe.  I have extensive experience of environmental and fisheries management in the UK and Europe (ICES, EC), and have Chaired many Working Groups and Study Groups in ICES.   

I have been closely involved in drafting and supporting the implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
