Personal profile
Biography
After studies in Cambridge, followed by an Oxford Research Fellowship, I have held posts at Cambridge, Birmingham, and now at UEA, serving as principal editor and from 1998 to 2011 in effect as manager of the British Academy's series of Anglo-Saxon Charters. Inaugurated in the 1960s by a committee that included Dorothy Whitelock, Peter Sawyer, and Sir Frank Stenton, the intention here is for the first time to publish definitive texts of all the 1,500 or so Anglo-Saxon charters surviving from before the Norman Conquest of 1066. Arranged archive by archive, twenty volumes have so far been published, of which I myself have edited or co-edited fourteen. In the longer term, my plan is to produce a guide to these materials updating and serving as a modern substitute for Peter Sawyer's great Handlist of 1968.
