Academic Background

Taibat Hussain is a doctoral researcher at the University of East Anglia, funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Her research interests lie at the intersection of education, gender-based violence, and technology. Her PhD research investigates how schoolgirls experience and make sense of sexual violence in school settings, how they use digital technologies, and how these technologies can exacerbate their vulnerabilities and experiences of sexual violence online.

In addition to her academic research, Taibat actively leverages her findings to inform programmatic interventions. She has collaborated with organizations such as the Restless Development and Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative, and she currently leads the award-winning project HerSafeSpace.

Taibat holds a Master of Science in Social Research from the University of Hull, where she graduated with distinction. Her dissertation focused on school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) in Nigeria, offering a critical analysis of national legal and policy frameworks and their provisions for addressing SRGBV.

She also holds a Master of Science in Development Economics from SOAS University of London, where she earned a distinction. Her research employed a qualitative approach to explore the relationship between education and unemployment among young people in Nigeria.

Taibat has earned a certificate in Power and Influence for Positive Impact from Harvard Business School Online. She has served on the Research Advisory Group for UNFPA’s Third TFGBV Symposium, as well as on the Research Advisory Group for UNESCO’s global study Beyond Filters: Amplifying Safe and Inclusive Sexuality Education on Social Media.

She is currently a member of the UNESCO SDG4 Youth & Student Network and Transform Education, hosted by UNGEI.
