Personal profile
Biography
I serve as a Clinical Professor in Cardiac Medicine at the University of East Anglia and an honorary consultant cardiologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Norwich as well as Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge.
My journey in medicine began at UCL, London where I earned my medical degree, followed by postgraduate training initially in internal medicine and then in cardiology in Cambridge and London. During this time I achieved the highest level 3 accreditation from both the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and the European Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.
Alongside my clinical expertise, I hold a Master’s Degree in Medical Education from the University of Bedford, a Master's Degre in Genomic Medicine from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance tissue characterisation from Imperial College London.
In Norwich, I am the Director of the Norwich Academic Training Office, funded by the NIHR, and overseeing the training and research for our Academic Clinical Fellows and Clinical Lecturers.
My research is in both clinical and basic science, with a strong focus on valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure and cutting-edge cardiac imaging. My passion lies in advancing cardiovascular care through innovation, education, and collaboration
I am also passionate about epidemiological research and have had the privilege of serving as Chair of the Population Science and Public Health Section of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (2020–2022) as well as a Board Member of the Association during this period. These roles provided valuable opportunities to engage in Big Data research, leveraging insights from UK databases and international collaborations.
At a national and international level, I am Council member of the British Heart Valve Disease (2022-2025, 2025-2028), Chair of the Social Media subcommittee (2022-2024) and Chair of the Communications Committee (2024-2026) of the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. I was elected as Treasurer and Executive Board Member of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (2022-2024) and re-elected for the 2024-2026 mandate.
With Covid19 my group's research focused on the pandemic producing guideline cited research with significant reach to the public. Some examples include:
Post-COVID-19 syndrome risk factors and further use of health services in East England
Post-COVID Condition in Patients With Cardiovascular Disease: Are Antivirals the Answer?
Risk Factors Associated With Post−COVID-19 Condition: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Additional articles I authored on Covid
These Covid-related articles have received very significant publicity with more than 2000 outlets reporting on them. One even reached 12 million on twitter/X. I was very honoured when my work on Covid was cited by the World Health Organization guidelines on Covid19 management!
For Covid19 and other research updates follow me on Twitter/X
Furthermore, to facilitate public and patient engagement I have co-authored multiple articles for The Conversation which have been translated in Spanish and French- ranging from blood pressure control in Covid, Covid skin signs, Covid nails, more unusual Covid symptoms but also Heart Failure.
