Accepting PhD Students
I am a clinical-academic with substantial experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, curriculum development and scholarship activities pursued at several Universities.
My current academic post focuses on the development, delivery and evaluation of Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) undergraduate curriculum, particularly for Level 6 (Year 3) and Level 7 s (Year 4) students. I am the pharmacy practice lead for Year 3 (PHA-6020Y) module, and have been responsible for clinical pharmacy curriculum, including relevant teaching materials, assessment planning, communication with learners/staff and representation at meetings with external organisations, such as NHS England.
As the specialist pharmacist prescriber in cardiology, I have applied my clinical knowledge, experience and skills to advance the undergraduate cardiovascular curriculum, especially clinical workshops and simulation-based education (SBE). I have acted as one of the champions for SBE within the School, liaising with colleagues at the School of Health Sciences (HSC) to share learning and evaluate the teaching. I have also contributed to the development and delivery of postgraduate courses, particularly the Independent Prescribing course for pharmacists.
As the Deputy Placements Director, I have led the development, delivery and evaluation of clinical placements, particularly the novel quality improvement and longitudinal hospital placements for Level 7 and Level 6 students, respectively. I had deputised for the Placements Director to lead the placements team, reviewing placement strategy, supporting placement organisation and ensuring quality assurance of experiential learning within the School. I have also chaired both internal and external meetings, such as those with the MPharm Placements Advisory Group (MPPAG).
Over the years I have participated in numerous collaborations and outreach activities (such as the Preparing for Pharmacy Programme for disadvantaged children), and have contributed to work of multiple external groups, such as the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing & Allied Professions (ACNAP) and Schools of Pharmacy Digital Community of Practice (SoPDCoP).
My primary area of research focuses on cardiology and clinical pharmacy, particularly the detection of atrial fibrillation (AF), anticoagulation and cardiovascular disease prevention strategies. I have led a number of mixed-methods research studies exploring the role of clinical pharmacists in the detection of AF in primary care: from GP surgeries and care homes to AF screening campaigns in public locations and places of worship. As part of these studies, I investigated the accuracy of commonly used diagnostic tools, such as single-lead electrocardiograms, alongside the cost-effectiveness of pharmacist-led interventions and stakeholder views in relation to novel clinical services. I have also led a systematic review into the safety and effectiveness of low molecular weight heparins for stroke prevention in AF and have collaborated with ACNAP to conduct mixed-methods research into the new mobile phone application to support cardiac rehabilitation, and to encourage medication adherence in patients following acute coronary syndromes.
I currently lead educational research, which investigates the role of simulation-based education (SBE) within the MPharm degree. As part of this programme of research, I have led a qualitative study into the perceptions of MPharm students undergoing SBE activities within a variety of simulated clinical settings. The findings of this study have provided foundations for a longitudinal investigation into the effectiveness of SBE within the pharmacy undergraduate curriculum, which is currently recruiting participants.
I have presented my research within the School and more widely, at both national and international conferences, such as European Society of Cardiology (ESC) congresses.
I am open to informal discussions with prospective students wishing to pursue a Master's or Doctoral degrees in areas of my research interest.
