Academic Background

William Hughes read for his BA, MA, and PhD at the University of East Anglia between 1982 and 1993, and taught in the British university system for more than a quarter of a century before joining the University of Macau, China, as Professor of Literature in English. He has published extensively in the fields of Gothic Literature and medical history, has participated in numerous television and radio broadcasts, and is currently working on a monograph which examines the culture of spiritualism in Victorian England. 

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
