Abstract
Condensation of phenyldipyrromethane with bisnaphthaldehyde 3 leads to unexpected formation of the scrambled 5,10-bridged porphyrin 5; this unprecedented selectivity suggests that an alternative scrambling mechanism to dipyrromethane acidolysis is operating.
