Abstract

How ancient sites come to be regarded as key places in collective memory and sacra-lity is a major, but understudied, concern in Andean archaeology. We often lack clear evidence for diachronic changes associated with the cultural process. This study reports on new data concerning the abandonment and reuse of Yayno, a major fortified hill-top settlement in the Pomabamba highlands (Ancash, Peru). New radiocarbon dates and analysis allow us to refine the dating and nature of its Late Recuay collapse and also a distinctive offering feature associated with the Inca. The evidence indicates that the end of Yayno was precipitated by local endemic warfare; by Inca times, it had become a place for religious observances and offerings.
